Alteration Questions

I always like to give the most accurate custom quote for my clients before they even come into the studio. These SEVEN questions allow me to do so. Typically I stay true to my quotes unless there's something a bride wouldn't know to tell me or realize needs to be adjusted. Also, I will never suggest anything to be altered unless I think it is absolutely necessary and it is always left to the bride's decision.

When is your Wedding Date or the date you need it for? Ie; Destination Date of Departure

1. Knowing your wedding dates allows me to see how much time we will have to alter the dress and if I need to add the rush fee to the quote.

Do you have pictures from the website or of you at your try on?

2. Sending pictures of the dress whether you are in it from your try on or they're from the website, means I'll be able to see roughly what needs to be done with the types of fabrics and embellishments.

Need a hem? How many layers does your dress has?

3. When providing the number of layers, ensure to pull each layer apart. It's a bonus if you know that there is a Horsehair hem, lace or fabric and lining attached. (these three cost more than a regular hem)

Do you need a bustle to dance the night away?

4. Bustles are a great way to keep your dress out from others feet and allows you to dance the night away with ease. So letting me know if you'd like this service of hooking up your train is definitely something to include in your details.

If you have lace does it go into the or over the seams?

5. If your dress has lace it is great to know if it goes into the seam or not. One we have to lift and replace and the other we don't, which can really change your quote.

Is there boning, like in a corset?

6. Knowing if there is boning where we would be adjusting the sides helps with your quote as with or without has different costs.

Share any and all other details for your alteration needs.

7. Any other alterations that I did not ask about such as; adding straps, sleeves, lace, or any embellishments.

These questions are the best way to get you to that most accurate custom quote.

Our alteration services include;

💋Groom/Groomsmen Suits

6 Reasons to have a Dress created for you

There are so many benefits to having a dress created for you however these top 6 are what I hear the most when working with my custom clients.

A Reception Dress that is Exquisite

Let me introduce THE RENEE, part of the 'This is Love' Collection. This Champagne Two in one; sequin lace, mock neckline with hand beaded deep v and fitted short skirt. Overlay removeable skirt with a long chiffon train. Perfect for a destination wedding or from wedding to reception. It really glitters and shines in the light as each sequin captures it.

I fell in LOVE with this lace the moment I saw it and knew it would become something incredible. To be honest, I actually went back to my supplier for it because I just couldn't resist. It was also used in our CINDERELLA gown and I just can't not wait for a special bride to claim either as her own.

You can find more videos and images of our latest Collection over on Instagram. As that's where I hang out the most, sharing tips, collections and more information about our services. 8 Ways to Less Stress During Wedding Season

8 Simple Steps for Wedding Stress Management. When you're mindful and intentionally use these tools your Wedding Planning will feel far less stressful. Even when things out of your control arise you'll be far more calm and able to respond.

  1. Have a mindful practice; breath work, meditation, journaling or anything that is intentional and allows you to pause, reflect and rejuvenate yourself.

  2. Move your body in a way that brings you joy. Forcing never aliviates stress but going for the nature walk, dancing or even lifting weights. Whatever way brings you joy do that.

  3. Know when you need to book your vendors and do it early. Go to wedding shows, research and find your vendors. This planning will make things easier as your wedding date approaches.

  4. Plan for something creative or a stay-cation, our minds love to look for solutions so a "problem" like this will have you feeling more joy and releiving stress.

  5. Create boundaries with your family and friends. This is a time to celebrate and have fun planning. Every one has their own opinions and that's wonderful but the main focus is uniting you and your partner.

  6. Have something predictable that you do every day. Routines allow our brains to feel safe and not in fight or flight when feeling stressed.

  7. Deligate, you do not have to do everything. Use your Bridal Party or anyone who has offered to help to do tasks that really don't require much of your attention.

  8. Sleep, know how much you need and get it. Lack of sleep creates brain fog, irritability and of course fatigue.

Doing these 8 steps consitantly throughout your wedding planning will allow for more ease, flow and fun through the journey from engagement to the day you say I do.

Join me LIVE over on our Instagram on February 13th at 2pm where I will go a little bit more into detail to help keep you consistent.

See you there!

Top 10 FAQS about custom dresses

Commonly Asked questions

    • Yes, we do have sample dresses that you can come and see however they’re all from photo shoots, as brides keep their dresses.

    • Everything included for this dress quote; fabric(research and shipping), labour, minor alterations, fittings and taxes.

    • You can be as involved as you want, some brides want me to send updates and pictures as I find fabrics and get things done, others wait until there first fitting. Totally up to you, this is your investment so I will provide as much information as I can for you during the process.

  5. What is the process?

  6. Is there a required deposit? Is it refundable?

    • Yes there are two deposits required; one is for booking the first meeting appointment which is $100 to hold your spot and will be taken off the final payment. Mother of the Bride Dresses

Your wedding day is definitely all about you and your partner however, it is a really BIG deal for Mom’s. Mother of the Bride and Groom dresses have become something that we have been creating a lot this year and have already booked a few for next year and 2024! The best part is they don’t have to be the same style, 3 colours that are offered and although lovely can not be the whole personality of the Mother.

Mom’s should feel confident and beautiful as they are so proud and happy to be there by your side as you say yes to you special someone. She will most likely be tearing up from your beauty and not being a little girl anymore, doing that in something that allows her to feel good is such a wonderful experience too.

Mother of the Bride Dresses

Shawls are also really popular with Mom’s and is something that can be custom to what she would love rather than just a rectangle piece of fabric that comes with her dress. All be it those shawl/scarf fabrics are a wonderful add on, having your own styled one makes a huge difference in how she will feel.

So whether it is for the Bride or the Groom’s Mother having a custom gown created for her is such a beautiful way for her to share in the experience and feel good AF on your wedding day!

Fall Weddings

Fall is definitely one of my very favourite times of year. With cool, crisp weather and gorgeous foliage, its the perfect setting for a seasonal wedding.

Autumn does so much more than set a pretty scene though, you can use the spices of the season for cocktails, muted, warm and earthy tones, dried and paper florals or fresh of course. The arrangements can include apples, pumpkins and gourds, OH MY! From sweet dĂ©cor to delish spiced cocktails, you can’t go wrong choosing a wedding date in September, October or November.

When purchasing a dress from a boutique it is good to know that you can add colour, an over lay or something unique that makes the dress exactly what you are wanting for your fall wedding theme.

Going the custom dress root can be very exciting because you can truly do anything you want. From a two in one overskirt and cocktail dress (picture couple loving the rain) to a Black dress fit for any autumn themed wedding.

I really love those halloween weddings but the classic black, orange and white with silver skulls and candelabras. Very chic and super fun! Can you imagine being able to wear a costume to a wedding?

Plan in those cute umbrellas incase it rains and of course your favourite fall beverage. It is your day and you can have anything you’ d like. This bride added this sheer overlay with cuffed sleeves to her dress to incorporate her edginess and add as a layer incase it was chilly.

You never know the temperature you’re going to get so come prepared for your photos. This bride and groom lucked out and get a moderately warm day which made for some stunning pictures without covering her dream dress that we altered.

Have some fun with a fall themed wedding, it can be truly anything you want it to be!

2023 Wedding Dress Trends

This week we’ll be discussing wedding trends of 2023. When we say trends we are referring to the swiftly changing fashion patterns that are displayed amongst various forms of media over a period of time.

Mississauga Wedding Dresses

Wedding dresses are typically imagined as being comprised of tulle, taffeta, silk, chiffon, crepe, and lace. Designers, however, put inventiveness front and center this season and offered fabrics that you might not generally connect with bridal. This season is about stepping out of the box and trying new and innovative styles. With fashion constantly pivoting back to previous decades, we’re seeing a lot of sheer fabrics, elaborate ball gowns, mock-necklines and a significant amount of asymmetrical necklines as party dresses for those receptions. Over Skirts are also incredibly popular from the aisle to the reception being able to remove and then enjoy the dance floor. We have 3 custom dress and pant suits for 2023 and 2024 that will have over skirts. These styles are typically associated with 1980’s fashion.

Straight from the runway!

Tulle and wedding gowns have always been a perfect fit, and the Fall 2023 collections introduced a fresh collaboration with this cherished bridal fabric. This season, we’re seeing designers worldwide enthusiastically embraced tulle, creating dresses entirely comprised of the fabric as well as gowns with enormous tulle skirts.

Mississauga Wedding Dresses

Moving on, shall we? Next, let's not undervalue the influence of a ball gown, particularly in bridal attire. We have seen a lot of elaborate gowns in the A.M.E.G. Designs repertoire in the past, however the option for how extravagant you want to customize your gown is limitless with this particular style of dress. Designers tend to ensure that this classic silhouette is included in their collections every season. You can never go wrong with feeling like a princess gracing the ball on your special day, according to the Fall 2023 runways, no matter what your wedding style may be.

What else is on trend for 2023? Bold blooms and blue hues with simple accessories so the gown does the talking. Bridal suits like, I said we have a few for 2024, extremely high slits and the oh so low open back as well as those straight necklines from the infamous Victorian Era.

I am really in love with the trends for next year because they are a beautiful shift from the previous years. Many of the pieces from our newest collection “This is Love” collaborate so much with the new trends. All the captures above are straight from the runway and my heart.

What will you be choosing for your wedding , will it be on trend?

Black and White Wedding Inspiration

This week we’ll be discussing black and white weddings!

Black and white weddings are a classic and simple concept that we absolutely adore!

These are two colours that have been associated with weddings for years! When you were a kid most likely you were picturing your husband in the black tuxe, it was always a black tuxe, white boutonniĂšre, and a long white princess dress for you haha.

However, times have changed. Though these are common colors for such a special occasion, this palette is however not for everyone. There are hundreds of new themes and styles for weddings but is this classic one still chic?

Mississauga Wedding Dresses

Both black and white are simple to dress up or down. No matter how lavish or simple your nuptials are, these colours are simple to obtain and work with. Black and white are excellent options if you want something simple, affordable, and attractive all at once, unlike some other colours or current designs.

If you are like me and love lace, which is very chic these days, add that as the white in your black/white, but as a twist try it in both black and white in your wedding decor and fashion accessories.

Wedding Veil Styles

To wear a veil or not wear

a veil that is the question?

This is a question many of my brides think about when ordering their dress. Which is one thing to do, definitely find your dress first. This way it will match and it can also be an addition to your dress. For example a chapel or cathedral veil can be the train to your dress if you don’t want one that’s too long. Veils can also be the back and shoulder covering you are envisioning that may be only for the ceremony.

Do you know the origin of the veil? Or at least where they believe it was derived? The Greeks and Romans, wore colour dresses like red to fend off evil spirits and obscured by a veil. Most times the bride-to-be could not see, so the person “giving her away” was actually guiding her down the aisle so that she would not bump into or trip over anything. It has in many cases been used to shield the brides face so that her future husband did not see her until the ceremony, especially in arranged marriages. Some say that it could have been a yellow egg yolk colour, apparently yellow was the earliest colour to be highly esteemed and was granted as an exclusive privilege to women for their bridal veils. They then evolved into religious traditions seen as a symbol of respect for women to cover their heads. When white dresses were worn to symbolize chastity, the veil then followed suit.

Veil Styles

Now veils are mainly to suit a brides style, and personality. From Birdcage to cathedral each pair with the brides dress and wedding perfectly. That’s where I come in! Like previously stated, find your dress first. Then try all your accessories, veils, head pieces, belts, what ever your heart desires.

Did you choose a ball gown? SO you decided to channel your inner princess with full skirt, classic. A fingertip veil will create a even more romantic look, and blend perfectly with any tulle skirt. Which will give the illusion of a longer veil and perfect if you have lovely detailing on the skirt you want to show off. However, if your gown does not have a tulle skirt a chapel veil may be the way to go if you’d like to add more of a dramatic flair to your look. Does the back of your dress - the bodice - have more embellishments or is more revealing? A shoulder veil may be the way to go so you can allow these details to shine as you desire.

The versatile A-line silhouette is perfect for many different veil styles. Really think about the details you want to show off here, considering the back view of your gown and what you’d like everyone to see. Does your dress have lovely beading, appliquĂ©s or intricate designs? An mantilla veil or elbow veil may be one for you to choose with a thin layer of tulle. Although, if you’d prefer to wow your guests, definitely go royal — you deserve it! — with the chapel veil, cathedral veil or even a regal veil.

What about a fit and flare? The trumpet dress is in between the A-line and mermaid when it comes to the flare of the skirt, which means it is fitted close to the body until mid-thigh and then jets out. Going with a fingertip veil would coordinate wonderfully with the skirt of the gown because it would fall right around where it flares out. On the other hand a flyaway veil or birdcage veil would show off your playful side adding a fun element to your attire.

As a kid I loved the little mermaid.. I mean I still do who are we kidding lol. The mermaid gown always makes me think of the magic of being a mermaid. How she became a girl to find love and how romantic it was for them
eventually they were wonderfully in love. I think the same magic can be added with a ballet veil or knee length veil, lets just say it would make your gown cohesive and your prince in awe. AND hey go regal or go home, this dress also allows for a longer veil like a thin chapel veil or cathedral veil.

What the sheath? With the bohemian theme that has made quite the impact in the wedding industry, these simple dresses make it easy to add any style of veil and it will look stunning. Just decide how much you’d like to show off and base your decision on this. A thicker or more heavily embellished veil will add the volume to your bridal look that you may be looking for as well.

Oh the tea length dress, I have received many orders for this one in a 1950’s theme and omg I love them! Perfectly paired with a birdcage veil which is so stylish and available with a variety of appliques and embellishments. Or your can go the Elizabeth Taylor way and have a two layered “high-low” option in the chapel veil, elbow veil or fingertip veil for your classic look!

You can also always just go with a beautiful wedding hair do, floral crown, hair comb or pins. No matter what you choose make it your own! You don’t need a veil especially these days and it’s your wedding day so make the decision that works best for you ;)

I hope this has inspired you to find exactly what you’re looking for, for your special day, don’t forget it is YOUR day!

Train Goals

Yesterday I posted a really awesome dress with an fantastically long train. And so that's what we're gonna talk about today is #traingoals. There are so many ways that you can achieve trains and I don't even think that people really know.

For example, right now I'm doing a dress that has the hem is to the floor. There's no train on the dress, but the veil she's wearing is a incredibly long cathedral veil. It is 122 inches, which is really, really long. The Bride just wants that for the ceremony. She wants that little bit of elegance and drama for walking down the aisle. This is a perfect way so that you can then take it off and you don't have to worry, no bustle, nothing like that, you can just go on your way and have a great time at the reception.

If you don't know what a bustle is, a bustle is when you hook or tie, pieces of the back of the train so that you can move around and dance without the train being stepped on or getting in the way. It's a really great way to do that. However if you don’t want a train on your dress, this is a perfect option.

You can also achieve your train goals without, having to do a bustle by having a removable skirt, so you can have a dress completely made for you and then have a piece that goes over top that you remove. That gives you that huge, long length that you want for a train. You can also, if you want even more, have a very long veil over that long train to give you that even more extension for your train goals.

Then we have different types of trains. There's sweep, chapel, cathedral and royal. The history of wedding dress trains goes as far back as 800 years ago, when the length of the train was used to indicate wealth and social status. The longer the train, the wealthier the family—and naturally, longer trains provided a more dramatic effect to impress any guests in attendance. Of course these days it’s not like that, Brides can wear anything they would like to. A lot of the time the train is for the aisle and for the pictures. If you're looking for that, extensiveness of a train, because you love them then there's so many options, especially with custom.

Alterations

Happy Wedding Wednesday!

Today we are going to discuss Alterations as that is a BIG part of what we do here at A.M.E.G. Designs!

The Alteration services that we provide for include the entire Wedding Party, from the Bride and Groom to the flower girl and ring bearer. Any dresses and suits that are involved in or going to can be altered here.

I am mainly going to be speaking about dresses today however I will discuss briefly about suits and how it works. Let’s dive in!

Hemming, the number one alteration we do here and you would believe how many types of hems there are and how many layers some dresses have. The main questions that I will ask; how many layers is your dress? Is there lace, horsehair hem, are there any layers attached? This all allows me to provide the most accurate quote. Counting the number of layers is important, make sure you peal those beautiful layers apart so you make sure you have provided the right amount. I have had clients send videos to ensure they count them correctly.

Lace and Horsehair hems are the most costly as we need to remove, cut and replace most of the in order to cut the hem to the desired length. Horsehair can be on one single layer of your dress or multiple, we had a dress recently that had 8 layers and 3 of those had horsehair hems. It does take a bit more work so that is why it can be on the higher end of cost for alterations. There are also hems where the fabrics are connected and may even have horsehair in between which is where you’ll find the cost goes up in terms of hems.

Lace trim is a similar process to horsehair hem as we need to remove, cut and replace or we can raise from the waist, or we can add some more tulle underneath and if you are wanting a little bit more volume this works well and its quite cost effective. Now when replacing the lace trim we want to make sure we do not change the pattern of the skirt and have to consider the appliques or lace. Some brides so cut it and aren’t too worried about keeping the same look and others want us to adjust those appliques as well. Which in turn of course is a premium cost. We can raise at the waist as long as it makes sense to do so because you have to take a lot into consideration when doing the hem this way, the zipper, lace, pleats, beading, to name a few.

Tulle hems are fairly easy as we just need to precisely cut it the length we need. Rolled hems are the most common, we cut and If you are keeping your train then we only cut and hem the front while blending it out to the sides , this way we can easily bustle the train for you and keeping it all floor length at the front.

Next the most common alteration is taking in and letting out. Since the pandemic letting out has been something we have been doing a lot more of which definitely gave us an opportunity to figure this one out more because our brides needed to get into their dresses. This can be done in a few different ways; most commonly adding a lace up back however, you can add panels, which I would only suggest on lace dresses and only letting out about 2 or 3 inches and to find lace that will match seamlessly. A lace up back would require to remove the zipper and create the pieces , loops, back cover piece and ribbon. This is something that does change the look of the dress and not everyone is a fan so you have to be completely open to it if it is the only option for you to wear your dress. Taking in can mean we need to remove and replace lace and/or bead, if the lace is in the seam it is much easier for us to take in however this is hardly ever the case. There may also be boning which creates more structure to your dress that we have to remove and replace in the side and bodice.

A bustle is something that lifts your dress and train up so you can dance the night away and enjoy the reception. We have done 1 point bustles to 12 point bustles it just depends on the style of dress. When you come for your fitting we figure this out either the first or after we adjust the bodice and hem. We need to play with it, it’s very much like a puzzle, which I love to do. So when we do them you can see what it will look like once we’re done.

Everything else, adding illusion necklines, adjusting necklines, adding lace for more coverage, adding sleeves, and straps in all different ways. You can have them removeable or completely attached. You can also have a complete deconstruction done if you love a dress but it isn’t exactly your vision we can make it so. Also know this will change the style of dress and if thats what you want then fantastic! Also be sure to ask a seamstress or a few to see if your dress can be turned into something you absolutely want to wear on your wedding day.

We also can do any of the above for any other dress in your wedding. All suit and shirt alterations are also available here pants, jacket, shirts, take-in, tapper, hem, adjust sleeve length, vents and more!

I hope this serves you and has provided some wonderful information for you in terms of alterations on your wedding day.

Fabrics, Colours and Bling Bling

Hello, we're back. It's a wedding Wednesday, once again, and today we're talking about fabrics, colors, bling-bling all the things that make every single detail of your dress magical. I believe that details matter so much, the littlest things can matter to create your vision.

When it comes to custom, what happens is you get to choose your fabrics completely and totally 100% all you. So this is how this dress is uniquely yours, right? When we have our visionary call, we talk about all the things you love about certain fabrics, satin, lace, tulle, chiffon and the colour you would love.

I then go and I search for options for you, and then I send you those options. Typically I like to send four or five depending on what we're looking at and a lot of the time this is for lace and other things like trims.

This way it's not overwhelming and you get to choose what you want to have for your dress. A lot of the time, my brides they're very decisive. Some are not, but that's okay. We work through it and we find whatever we need.

This bride wanted to have an very light off-white wedding dress.

Now during the process of choosing fabrics we must find it in the colour you are wanting. Whether if be Bright white, off-white, ivory or even PINK! I've had brides ask me, will this color worked for me. When you try dresses on, you'll see what colors work for you, and you'll know that you either want white, white, or another variation. I also have samples of fabrics that you can place against your skin to see. Most of the dresses we create are off-white, however, we’ve even dyed fabric to get the exact colour that our Bride envisioned her dress to be.

Then we have the bling bling bling! Bling-bling, jewels and beading can be incorporated into many aspects of your dress. If you have lace on your dress, it can be incorporated into the applique, added to trim or the edge around your hem or train. Adding a belt is always a way to add a little something extra or it can be just in your hair.

With the addition of a glitter fabric under neath and a small sequin throughout the lace appliques gave this bride just the right amount of shine for her wedding day.

Every Bride is so different and have such a unique visions. They either want the entire dress covered in beading and crystals or very few sequins that give only a little shimmer when the light hits the fabric. It's going to be for your personality, that fits you best. So BLING it up or tone it down, with custom you can have all that your heart desires.

Those are some of the main topics during our visionary call your fabrics, colors and your bling bling. the fabric and the color that comes first after we do our measurements. Then you receive options , once you choose, the fabrics are ordered and we get started on creating your dream dress!

Bridesmaid Dresses

Good morning today, we are talking all about bridesmaid dresses. I get this question all the time. Do you create bridesmaid dresses or do you just do wedding dresses? We do the entire wedding, not just the wedding dress, but the bridesmaids, maid of honor, mother of the bride, mother of the groom, flower girl, wedding guests, whoever else is going to your wedding, going to be in your wedding, wearing a dress. Bridesmaid dresses is a huge burning question that I get from so many of my clients. I get a lot of bridesmaid dresses in, so we're going to discuss about three different ways to have your bridesmaid dress done, let's get started.

The first one that we have to talk about, is custom, because that's the main thing that we do here and the first custom dress option I'm going to talk about is the infinity dress. The infinity dress is a more budget friendly dress. It is one that works well on all bodies. I have made for an 11 year old, to a plus size, all different shapes and sizes tall, short, whatever it may be. And they work really well! They have a circle skirt, so it drapes really well when it's worn and it just flows beautifully. If you know me, you know that I love a circle skirt very much so I love infinity dresses. They tie in all different ways. If you don't know what they are, you can see some options in our Shop Gowns section. They tie in all different ways and they're perfect for your bridesmaids because they can get some of their personality in, and still be cohesive altogether so that it looks nice for your wedding. You can get the same color. I believe that we have about 42 colors that you can choose from for your bridesmaid infinity dresses. They start off at $200 to $300 and that would include all your fabrics, labour and the minor alterations plus applicable taxes. So anything that doesn't go above and beyond, and then your fittings, that's all included.

You can have them short, you can have them long, you can have them ankle length, tee, length, whatever you want. And, uh, you can also add like broaches with them. They're really pretty. You can do so many things with them and, and you can wear them again. And they're super comfortable. I have one that I made for myself that's floral. So nice to where in the warmer seasons spring, summer and fall. So I really love it.

The next one we're going to talk about is complete custom. So this is where we design it completely for your bridesmaids, with a pattern and everything. To start you would send us a picture of what you would really love for your bridesmaids and what they have decided that they would love. We would then do a quote up for you and your quoting includes the same thing as the infinity dresses, because it's still custom. That would include your fabric, labor, minor alterations, as long as it doesn't go above and beyond and your fittings plus taxes.

These ones start at $325, depending on the style. The average cost of a custom bridesmaid dress is between $350 and $400. The good thing and an awesome thing about a fully custom dress is that it's completely made to the idea of what you're wanting. All your bridesmaids will be able to have the perfect fit for them. Size and body shape for every curve and every line.

The third and final way that you can have a bride bridesmaid dress done here, is alterations.

So you can get a dress from a boutique. You can get a dress from online. The online stores that I really like that I've worked with are JJ house and Azazie, those are the two main ones that I've worked with and the quality of the dresses so far has been really good. The price point is nice for a lot of the bridesmaids. I have had bridesmaids who have brought me so many dresses, that I've altered for them because they're in so many weddings, cause they're like the best friend forever with all the Brides in their lives, haha. They don't want to spend a ton of money on dresses because they're always in weddings and these two online stores work well for them.

I always recommend when you're buying a dress from a boutique or online to just remember. To add in a bit of a cost for alterations. It makes a big difference because then you'll know exactly what you're spending at least a rough amount, especially if you're not sure how much the alterations will cost. That's the perfect opportunity to reach out to a seamstress and get a quote to know exactly what you would be spending. I also like to tell you, before you order that sometimes you can purchase a dress at a boutique or online and then get alterations, and then it equals about the same amount as getting a custom dress from start to finish. As of right now our Bridesmaid alterations average cost is $200 to $350 which when added to your dress cost is roughly the same or more.

So if you are looking to have a custom dress, that's definitely the option that I would take if I realized that the budget I had is about the same as if you were going to buy a dress and then get it altered.

We do all kinds of alterations here, the most common alterations we do here for Bridesmaids are hemming, and then taking in with, or without boning and then we also do adjusting the slit. So a lot of the times, because dresses are made very long, the slit won't always sit right after hemming, sometimes the slit will like start at the knee and that can look a little bit funny proportion wise. So we just take it up a little. Sometimes a lot, depending on how much you want to show off your legs.

Those are the main things that we do here for bridesmaid dresses, infinity dresses, custom dresses, and then alterations. So, if you're looking for a bridesmaid dress don’t stress! We’re here to make all your dream dress visions come true!

I hope that you enjoyed this wedding Wednesday. It is so much fun for me to talk about bridesmaids dresses! Have a fabulous rest of your week, and we'll see you next Wednesday.

Your Desginer,

Amanda Garrett

Wedding Wednesday: Heirloom Dresses

“Every design begins with an even better story.” - Lorinda Mamo

The best part of doing a deconstructed dress is that mom is involved. Typically the ones I've done, they've all been from mom. But I have done ones that are from a address that you purchased and you want a complete overhaul on it.

Then there's also, from grandma, from great-grandma heirloom dresses, they're so much fun to do and create a modern style from to bring your personality forward, but still being really sentimental because they're from your Mama. Right? So I love this topic. I love talking about deconstruct dresses.

I love creating from deconstructed dresses. I've had a few this year and the first one I did, I created it was a big ball gown dress with poof sleeves, the nineties, right? A lot of them are very similar and lots of intricate beading. I love the way the lace and the beading and everything is on these dresses from the nineties.

It was done really, really well so for this one, I took the bodice out and I removed the skirt and made a mermaid instead of the ballgown. But we reattached the ballgown as a removable back piece. And she looked like an absolute princess, as you can see.

What we did was we created the mermaid, but we used the top and we made the sleeves, small, like quite a bit smaller actually. An off the shoulder look, but they still had a little bit of poof because she wanted that princess look, that, almost Disney princess look and we were able to create that.

Then I just took pieces from the skirt that I had cut and I put them on the bottom parts where the fitted part of the mermaid went and, then it kind of trickled a little bit over, onto the flare of the mermaid, it was absolutely gorgeous. We also had to alter it quite a bit and she came from Ottawa.

We did quite a few fittings and she drove six hours to do this because she really, really believed in the investment of making this dress exactly how she wanted and she wanted it done by me. That was amazing. So, there was quite a few fittings and we altered the back completely. I added functional buttons that went all the way down the dress back. And we really worked together to create something really beautiful for her, her mom was so excited because she was wearing a piece of her on her wedding day.

The second one I did this year was another one from the nineties. A very big ballgown, really high neck line with gorgeous lace detailing and fringe beading. The bride specifically said, “I can't have that beading, uh, the fringe beading can not happen”, so we made sure that was used in a different way. However, this one, I just removed the pieces of lace appliques and put them all over the piece that I created.

Basically I created a dress for her, that was a very beautiful flowing dress she had tulle, on the top, like a tulle mesh that was see-through. Covered it with the appliques from her mom's dress and did a little bit more simpler on the back. She had her mom's buttons down the back as well, such a nice touch.

I also removed all the beading, all those fringe beaded pieces, I created a belt for her and it just made the dress.

Doing it this way you still get that sentimental value of mom's dress or whoever's dress, and be able to do it to the style you would love most. So wonderful.

I've also created pieces from these heirloom dresses, where I created a type dress. I used the bodice and then I created a bottom and I added the bottom lace to it and to the knee basically. It was just a reception dress and it was absolutely stunning.

You can do anything with a dress, either from either an heirloom dress or a dress that you see potential, and you see that there is something in it that you love, but you want to create it and make it your own exact uniquely to you. And that is what we do here.

That is why I do what I do to make things and create things to bring your vision to life so that it is uniquely yours. No one else is going to have these pieces ever. And, and that's the beauty. The whole point is that you feel beautiful and confident and, you know, looking back on these pictures from your wedding day, you're still going to be swooning over these pictures and you're going to be so happy that you made the investment and you did.

So wishing you a very happy Wednesday, and I hope that you have a fabulous rest of your week.

Amanda Garrett

5 Tips for Getting a Custom Fairytale Wedding Dress

Imagine a feeling of ease and beauty, knowing that from the moment you have the final fitting of your dress, you're going to be able to move through your wedding with such grace. Walking down the aisle, where your partner-to-be will be in awe of you
to the dance floor where you'll have the time of your life

I am sure you have a vision, an idea that is pre-existing about how you wish to look on your wedding day. It’s the reason a custom-made, tailored design is the perfect solution for most brides, especially after searching and trying on what feels like a thousand ready-made dresses. This will share some guidance from custom Brides I have worked with on the tips for getting the  Custom Fairytale Wedding Dress of your dreams.

MarandaElyssePhoto-31.jpg
  1. Try on Dresses in a boutique to know what style you want. This is a crucial part of the Custom process. When you know what dress style fits you, you will have a better idea of the end result.

  2. What colour do you want? With Custom your dress can be any tint of white or any colour of the rainbow and beyond! I have had pink, blue with yellow tulle, White with red tulle and many more. Fabrics are also something to be sure on, this makes it a lot easier to find samples for your dress.

  3. Get all the information you need from the Designer. Know what is included in the quote, Fabrics, Alterations, Fittings, taxes. What is the process? How many fittings will there be? What is included for the alterations? How much is the initial cost? Do they have a payment plan? Whatever you need the Designer should be able to easily provide you with answers to these questions.

  4. You chose your Designer, incredible! Now you just need patience, ordering fabrics can take a little time so being patient is important. A great designer will include you in the entire process from start to finish. My Brides love when sneak peeks are shared in stories on social media.

  5. Trust the process! Having your vision created by someone can be somewhat nerve racking however you invested in this and your Designer so go with the flow, she or he will make all your dress visions come true.

Take these 5 tips into consideration when you are looking into your wedding dress, they will help you know that custom is the perfect place to have your fairytale visions come true.

A Real-Life Fairy God-Mother

Once upon a time, in a cozy house, on a quiet street, in a village on the edge of a booming metropolis, a young seamstress discovered she could perform magic. It was a transformative sort of magic that could make every bride look and feel amazing

We all love fairy tales and, when I complete a dress for a client, it makes me feel like a real-life Fairy God-Mother! The magic occurs when a bride’s vision comes to life, and fits all of their curves (or lack of them) perfectly. True to the genre, all good fairy tales begin at home. This one is no exception. You see, I struggled with body-image issues for a long time. For years, I suffered from never feeling happy in the clothes I was wearing — literally feeling uncomfortable in my own skin. Everything changed on the day I picked up my scissors, cut into some fabric, and sewed my first dress. I took the pattern and adjusted it to my measurements. There was a moment, just before I tried it on, when I felt hesitant, worried my work would let me down. But the moment I pulled that dress on, well, it was magic. It fit me perfectly and, as a result, for the first time in my life, I felt fabulous! That dress made me aware that having something tailored to my own personal shape made me not only feel more comfortable, but heightened my self-image. Inspired, I embarked on a journey which, with a lot of self-love care, has helped me see an even clearer image of myself. It also gave me a clear vision for my business, to share my joy with the world! I have experienced the thrill of that moment over and over again. My goal has been to elevate and accentuate the best parts of my clients, leaving the rest behind them. Every day, I use my weapons of dress construction to make visions come to life. The ultimate challenge is to listen to an idea that someone has in their mind and translate it, craft it, form it into what I hope resembles their dream dress. Over the years, I have created and altered hundreds, if not thousands, of gowns and there is one thing that makes everything I do worth it: witnessing the ecstatic joy on their faces as they slip into the dress for the final fitting. The transformation into a fairy tale princess is immediate as they turn and spin around in front of the mirror, feeling the perfect fit, beaming with happiness. Dare I say it again? It’s magic!

Each of my clients arrive with a vision, an idea that is pre-existing about how they wish to look. It’s the reason custom-made, tailored design is the perfect solution for most brides, especially after searching and trying on what feels like a thousand ready-made dresses. That’s where I come in! As a crafter, there is nothing more satisfying than starting a project, finishing it runs a close second. The process is stimulating. At the initial consultation we discuss fabric and style. I measure every inch of my client to ensure the gown will fit all those ‘perfect imperfections’ (with thanks to Ed Sheeran for such a great expression). Sketches and cups of tea, and more sketches and tea, until the gown starts to come to life in my mind. There is such delight in sourcing fabric – the satins, the silks, the lace – it’s like a smorgasbord of texture. Then crafting out the pattern, piecing the dress together like a jigsaw puzzle, to ensure a perfect fit. The moment of truth comes as I prepare to cut. Like a carpenter, I measure twice, double-checking pins are secure before I pick up one of the most critical tools in my toolkit – no, not a magic wand – a shining pair of scissors. For me, there is nothing more exciting than pinning freshly cut pieces of fabric together and sitting down at the sewing machine. And this is where I wish I did have a magic wand to wave, or perhaps some sparkles or a puff of smoke because, with a ‘Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo’, the perfect fitted dress has come to life! Exactly what was envisioned, or more frequently, the words are, “Amanda! This is better than I could have ever dreamed!” Yup, I feel like a Fairy God-Mother every time.

MarandaElyssePhoto-1.jpg

Over the last ten years I have been privileged to create some lovely dresses, but I believe the dress you see here reflects my best work yet. For some reason, I just feel creatively connected to this one. It highlights my skills. The style is based on a pattern that I have altered many times and followed once before, however I have never created one quite like this. My husband says it’s his favourite and he has seen more wedding dresses than any other man I know. Each piece of fabric that I cut, each layer upon layer that was sewn together felt effortless. It was almost magical, as if I was achieving the vision towards our first fitting on some sort of a creative energy high like no other. My client arrived for her fitting. She loved it! She was delighted to see her vision becoming a reality. Each lace appliquĂ© was hand-sewn and took several days. With the kids and other obligations in my life, there were moments when I felt I would never finish the bodice! But as each day passed, I grew more excited to continue. The final result was such an achievement. It is an honour to provide a service that fulfills dreams. To say that I enjoy ‘crafting’ is a gross understatement. Each piece that I alter or create to fit the bride’s size, personality and style allows me to share my magic with the world. My goal is for everyone to feel beautiful and confident on the day of their wedding and beyond.

And so we draw to the end of the fairy tale. The little seamstress who discovered she could perform magic feels most days like a real life fairy godmother, making each clients dress visions come true. And, as she creates their dreams, she is living her own. Dreams that are so big and beautiful, there are times she has to pinch herself to believe they’re true. And somewhere, behind a pile of fabric, surrounded by needles and pins and scissors, she is grinning from ear to ear, because she is living ‘happily ever after’.

A dream come true

“I showed Amanda what I wanted in my wedding dress and she worked so hard to get every detail to perfection! She was lovely to work with and is so talented. She also made my garters and veil, my mom's Mother of the Bride dress, the dresses for my bridal party, and face masks for the bridal party and groomsmen. I highly recommend her if you want a custom bridal experience. She will make your dreams come true!”

3 Ways to Alter an Illusion Dress

This one comes up alot with my clients. "Are you able to cover..." (fill in the blank) Illusion dresses are gorgeous, however if you have some insecurities you'd like the conceal these aren't always the easiest choice. However you can always alter these dresses to have them be your dream dress and highlighting only your assets.

1. Have lace appliques added to the front and back. This can be as space or as full as you'd like it to be. I have done this sever times and it always looks so beautiful and some of my brides don't even realize I've hidden those scars or tattoos until I say "and it covers that so nicely for you."  A job definitely well done!

2. Use skin tone or the same fabric to completely cover those Illusion pieces. This is one I do more for religious reasons or the Mother of the Groom has requested maybe its just a little too exposed. Making the in-laws happy, check!

3. Add lace or fabric sleeves. This is a request I also get because our arms seem to be a zone us women don't love. Now if the dress already has Illusion sleeves you can add appliques or change them out if you're still uncomfortable.

The point is on this day you should feel beautiful, confident and comfortable, not worry about any insecurities you may have because there's no time for that on your wedding day. That's why I do what I do so you don't have to!
